MGSD Communications Regarding Reopening Plan and Survey

July 16, 2020

Hello MGSD Families,

We hope this communication finds you all well!  We know you are anxious to plan for the school year and we have been working diligently to revise our Plan B to meet all requirements under the state’s revised school reopening plans:  Strong Schools NC.  Under the circumstances, while keeping the safety of our students and staff at the forefront of our decisions as well as how to best educate our students, we feel that we have developed optimal plans to begin our school year on August 17.

We ask that all of our parents carefully look over Plan B, Plan C, and the MGSD Online Academy (MOA) at the links below and then take the MGSD Student Return to School Intentions (Parent/Guardian Survey) Fall 2020.  We will use this feedback to help inform MGSD’s decision regarding which Plan we will implement.  This decision will be made at our called Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, July 22, at 8:30am, in the MGSD Performing Arts Center.  If you plan on attending the Board Meeting, please keep in mind that space will be limited due to social distancing guidelines.  In addition, we will complete a temperature and symptom screening of all attendees prior to entry.  Face masks will be required.

We know you have questions and probably wonder why our original Plan B changed. The requirements for Plan B became stricter under the updated school reopening guidelines. Utilizing the 50% of physical capacity clause from the original guidelines, we had more flexibility.  With the required 6 feet between all students and the removal of the 50% capacity clause, we discovered that our original plan would not work.  We measured classrooms, as well as set up desks in different configurations in order to find the maximum number of students we could fit in a classroom at our different grade levels to come up with the updated Plan B.  We also took into consideration the need for our families’ children to be on similar schedules, which as parents ourselves, we believe is important.  Finally, this schedule allows for more deep cleaning and sanitizing in the school buildings.

Please keep in mind that whether we choose Plan B or Plan C, this will only be our entry plan. We will continually assess whichever plan we start under with the goal of having as much in-person instruction as possible under state requirements.  Also, if enrollment in our MGSD Online Academy allows for smaller in-person class sizes, we will examine the possibility of increasing the number of in-person instructional days.

Thank you for all you do to help us be the best district possible.  We appreciate you!
