🍎 Fueling Students for a Strong September

September is a season of fresh beginnings—new routines, changing weather, and plenty of locally grown produce. At school, good nutrition plays a key role in helping students stay energized, focused, and ready to learn. Our School Nutrition team is proud to partner with families by serving balanced meals every day, featuring favorites alongside fresh finds like North Carolina–grown apples and pears. Together, we’re building healthy habits that support success both in the classroom and beyond.

🌞 Don’t Skip Breakfast
Breakfast is available every school day. Studies show a healthy breakfast improves focus, attendance, and test performance.

🥗 What’s in a School Meal?

Every meal served in our cafeterias follows federal nutrition standards that are carefully designed to support children’s health, growth, and learning. Our goal is to provide meals that are both nutritious and appealing to students, while teaching healthy habits that last a lifetime.
Here’s what you’ll always find on a school meal tray:
  • Fruits & Vegetables 🥕🍎 – Students are offered a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables every day, encouraging them to “eat the rainbow” and explore new flavors.
  • Whole Grains 🌾 – Bread, pasta, rice, and tortillas are made with whole grains to provide long-lasting energy and fiber.
  • Lean Proteins 🍗 – Options such as chicken, turkey, beans, and cheese support muscle growth and brain development.
  • Low-fat or Fat-free Milk 🥛 – Milk provides calcium and vitamin D to support growing bones.
Meals are also:
  • Age-appropriate – Portion sizes are tailored to meet the needs of growing children.
  • Lower in sodium and saturated fat – Following USDA guidelines for healthier meals.
  • Balanced for energy – Designed to keep students fueled through the school day without the sugar spikes and crashes.
